Berns is the president and owner of MJ Solutions, Inc., which among other services, provides assistant to legal counsel with case analysis and development and witness preparation. In 1982, she became the first female operating vice president of a major northeastern consulting firm, Reddy Communications, Inc.

In addition to her successful consulting career, Dr. Berns has served on the National Council for the American Forensic Association and is a member of the National Communication Association, Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Honorary Society, the American Society of Trial Consultants and the Entrepreneurial Woman's Network.
